Clown solos
Chairs have been present in many of my recent solo clown performances. Some years ago I bought some old bentwood pub chairs and took them apart. My idea was to re-assemble a chair and be able to make it fall apart at will, whilst sitting on it playing the accordion. That level of control proved impossible to achieve. Or, if it was possible, it would have taken a long time of practice, that I wasn't motivated to get into.
Then, one day, a friend who was curating a night of improvisation performance at Chisenhale in London invited me to perform. I said yes, without thinking about it. I then had the idea to take one of my collapsing chairs with me, and to spend the 10 minutes allotted to me 'being with the chair'.
Impro or gags?
My solo clowning is somewhere between free impro and traditional gags.
My attempts to find my own true style are constant and ongoing: solo, part improvised and very risky. It's been evolving and devolving for quite a while... probably ever since I started performing. It's been seen in various forms, some successful, some complete failures.
